Port Saint John Sets a 60% Emissions Reduction Target!

We’re thrilled to share that the team at Port Saint John has set a target to reduce their scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 60% below 2022 levels by 2030!

To meet their goals they will be reducing emissions from electricity and natural gas at their cruise terminals, and converting their fleet vehicles to low emissions options as vehicles reach end of life or leases end. They will be converting all light posts at port owned terminals to high efficiency alternatives and ensuring all new ones are high efficiency. They will also be including green lease elements to any short or long term leases, building any new port owned buildings to a net-zero standard, and retrofitting any newly acquired buildings to be in line with hitting their climate targets. Two additional green projects they’re taking on are phasing out the purchase of plastic water bottles for port hosted events and meetings by the end of 2023, and supporting one habitat restoration/conservation project every year.

“The global maritime transportation industry is working towards decarbonization to combat climate change. It’s important that onshore partners like ports and terminals also play their role. That’s why Port Saint John has developed climate targets which will shape our journey towards reducing our impact,” says Jane Burchill, Decarbonization & Environment Manager at Port Saint John.

Green Economy New Brunswick has been proud to support them in establishing a baseline GHG emissions measurement, reaching this reduction target milestone and working with Port Saint John to identify which activities will be most effective in reducing their emissions. We look forward to continuing to work together over the coming years to support them to achieve their climate goals.
